Emerging Technologies

Advancements in technology most often come about as people try to solve specific problems. When brainstorming solutions, oftentimes new discoveries/technologies emerge.

Watch the video clip below about a problem in poor countries and how engineering students around the country were given a task to design a solution:

By creating a new technology - incubators made with used car parts - poor countries who have a high rate of premature births with 20% of those babies dying from cold and those that survive have life-long health problems, were able to find a low-cost solution to the problem.

Follow the link to watch a video clip related to military surveillance:  Air Force Bugbots

Next, watch this video clip about the Maverick Flying Car at Oshkosh in 2010; transportation that is fast, reliable, and able to access remote areas.

Do you think that something like this would actually sell? What other thoughts do you have about this project? Please comment on this post and add your first and last name at the end of your post.

Lastly, your assignment today is to take a look at Technology Review's 2012 Special Report on 10 Emerging Technologies. Select one article to read and give a short summary of what your article was about. From what you read, create a new post on your personal blog entitled Emerging Technologies and respond to the following questions in paragraph form:

  • What inferences/assumptions can be made about the future technology?
  • What surprised you the most?
  • What are the possibilities for the future in this area?
  • Looking at the list from 2009, are there any technologies that were considered "emerging" back then that are now being used?
  • Give any other comments you have to offer.

  1. I feel like the product would sell, however, I don't think it's something people would use daily because of the regulations that would be put out. I think there'd be so many limitations on the car (too many other flying cars, weather's too unsafe, not taking off in a traffic jam, etc.) that the longer it was out on the market, the more the sales would decrease.

  2. I think that the Maverick Flying Car would sell because people can become inpatient and are always looking for a way to make their trips shorter and faster. Nico Quello

  3. I think that a flying car would sell, but not as much as a normal car. Flying cars are just a little too much, and if everyone had them, there would be no normal cars. Also, people need to realize that we already have flying cars in the world, and they're airplanes.

  4. Yes i do think something likr this would sell. But it would be like the first car ever invented only the richest people around can buy one. then later on i feel like everyone will be able to afford then. But i also feel that ones everyone does get them it will be just like it is today but crashes and trafic in the air.

  5. I do no think that the flying car would sell today. When you are done flying you have to put the parachute away and it doesn't do it for you. I think that the idea is great but it is not yet practical. It is also probably really expensive.

  6. I think only a few people would buy this, it can only hold like five passengers and its not that safe. The car looks like it does not have a good out side structure, there is nothing protecting you from falling out of the car if you turned sharp. Also I do not think it would work for a traffic jam issue, you can not all the sudden fly out of a traffic jam you have to be accelerating.

  7. I think the car would sell because the people looked excited when they saw it but I don't think they would know when to use it. The surprising thing is that there was such a thing as a flying car. This accomplishment can lead to bigger advances in technology that can help people with medical problems or for everyday life. Yes there are technology's back then that where emerging that are used now.

  8. I think that this vehicle would sell, people are interested in hearing about the flying car. So they are intrigued about it and wondering if it would actually work, and make it into the future. When you see all of the people stopping this guy you know that they're interested in it and would be willing to buy one. Especially when there is a traffic jam and they need to get somewhere they can avoid all cars and just fly.I think that there could be some problems because if a lot of people did buy one they there could be accidents in the air, which would be very dangerous.

  9. I think something like the amazing car would quite easily sell to people with a large amount of money. Although amazing, this car is most likely very expensive and would be hard to upkeep. For these reasons I think it would be sellable, but extremely hard to sell to the average person. A random car that can also fly is not needed in the ever day life and would be considered by many a waste of money.

  10. I think that the flying car would sell, first the price would be very high like when electric cars came out. But eventually the price would be affordable for the middle class. I think that if these were mass produced then there would have to be established areas that you have to travel in because if not people would be crashing in air and that would be a huge mess.

  11. I think it would sell but if alot of people bought them you could start to see problems with crashes because there isn't a road in the air. Its really cool just the thought of getting stuck in taffic and flying instead is awesome.

  12. I think that this product is a good idea and that it could be very useful, but it wouldnt be used on a dailey basis. I think this because of all the other cars flying around i think it would be very dangerous to have cars flying around, alot mor dangerous then driving on the road. Also the weather can effect the driving even more than it dose know and more people would get hurt. I think that if people start getting injured more in these cars than less people will buy them and eventually they wont be avaible to buy anymore.

  13. I think this product would sell, if they didn't make to many laws about it. I think that it would be dangerous because you wouldn't know who was flying at the same time, or where. I think at first everyone would want one, then like everything people sell, after a while it wouldn't be a big deal.

  14. If they put this on the market for people, many people would buy the car. i do and dont want this car to be sold, i do because its a quick way to travel and it would be cheaper than buying a an airplane ticket, i dont because that would take away the tradition of "Road Trips" and I think if they did sell this it'd be really expensive.

  15. I don't think that the flying car would sell today, but maybe sometime in the future when there were more features to make it easier to put the parachute away. I also think that if it were to try to sell today it would probably be very expensive and not many people could afford them. The guy in the video mentioned you either have to land in an airport or a field and not everybody can do that.

  16. Indeed I do think the flying car would sell because it has so much to offer. It can ride on land, air, or even water and can be used for various tasks. It surprised me the most to see that it gets 30 miles per gallon high way even with all the extra stuff. Plus it's great for a zombie apocalypse. I could also do without the parachute though, but all in all I think this is an awesome product.

  17. i think that the flying car would sell because it would help you get out of traffic jams more faster. when you see a flying car you get all excited because its easier and faster to get from one place to another but in some cases its not. i think at least only 5-10 people would actually purchase a flying car because its not that safe especially if you have kids the outside looks like there's no protection so you could fall out of it if you are not to careful.

  18. This car would most likely sell since many people have tried to make flying cars before. However, most of these flying cars didn't drive very well. I am not completely sure it would be released to the general public though. This is because if too many people have flying cars, they will need to come up with flight traffic regulations and rules. 19. i think it will sell eventually, but the billion, and millionaires will probably buy them first. They should have street lights and stuff up in the sky and also police officers up there. That would be cool to have like a flying Burger King and stuff to so you don't have to come down to get food.

  20. Yes, I think the flying car would sell. I'm sure not a lot of people would have them. But I believe it would be much more easier to get around. Like mentioned in the video, if you're stuck in a traffic jam you can fly there. The only dangers I see with it driving on the highway is that it is so small. It does not have as much protection as an actual car.

  21. I don't think this car would sell to the general public, for two main reasons. First, most people wouldn't have the money to buy this car. A car costs around $25,000, and then you add the cost of a small plane to that? I don't know anyone who can afford that. Secondly, there's no way the government would allow this to be sold. There's so many things that can go wrong with the takeoff, landing, and flying, and people would most likely get hurt. And if you get into a crash with this thing, it's not going to protect you very well. It looks flimsy, and the main thing parents look for when buying a car is safety, for their kids.

  22. I think this will sell eventually. I think people are going to be cautions about it at first to make sure it really is safe. However, if this does sell greatly there could be traffic issues. That would force police and traffic officers to be up there also. Also the man talked about being in traffic situations, when i think about being in a traffic situation i think about being in the city. I think it would be hard to drive a flying car in the city because of all the big buildings.

  23. I think this car could sell, but only to the people that have huge amounts of money to spend on a flying car. For the average person, this is much to expensive because on top if it being a car, you have to have all of the extra things that an airplane would have, including all the communication systems, weather and location systems, and the education. No one can just jump on a plane and fly around for a while, you have to know how to use the equipment, where and when to land, and know where other planes are. I feel like this is much too dangerous to be released to be sold to the public. The flying car is very cool, though. Maybe in time, with a little more development, this could possibly work out.

  24. I think the car would sell because you need something that fly's and drives so you have a two and one deal. you get good millage for driving but really not the plane. But I really don't know how safe it is inside the car.

  25. If it were me and I had the money I would definitely buy this car. I think it would sell by the way everyone was looking at it and taking pictures of it. People would love to have something like this. The thing with that is if there is one person that has it they can control the rules on it. If everyone or a lot of people were to buy this car there would be so many restrictions that it would be more of a toy to use on occasion rather than an everyday car.
